LATEST UPDATES FROM THE FERRERO GROUP ON ITS 2025 PACKAGING COMMITMENT

News nutella

The Ferrero Group shares its latest updates on its commitment for 100% of its packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. The latest updates include a raft of new activities and collaborations, including Nutella joining forces with Loop and Carrefour in Paris, France, for a new 10-store reuse pilot scheme, Ferrero becoming a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation - taking part in the New Plastics Economy (NPEC) Initiative, as well as new recyclable packaging for Kinder Happy Hippo and a new alliance with 4evergreen.

Nutella joins forces with Loop and Carrefour
Nutella, has joined forces with Loop – the leading reuse platform and Carrefour for a reuse pilot scheme in Paris, France.

Through the new scheme, shoppers can purchase a specially designed reusable Nutella jar from the ten pilot stores and the Carrefour website, for which they pay a deposit. Carrefour will then collect the empty jars for washing and reuse.

Ferrero’s in-house design team worked closely with Loop’s experts to develop the new pilot Nutella jar, the first of its kind, meeting all the needed criteria for reuse. This collaboration has resulted in a specially designed jar that is durable, safe, and hygienic and features an optimised label and seal that can be easily removed during the wash cycle. In addition, collection programmes across France are already available for consumers to recycle the current Nutella glass jars and plastic caps. However, through this pilot scheme, Ferrero, Loop and other leading brands will be able to test operationally and from a consumer perspective what benefits the reuse platform can bring as a collective model.

Participation in the New Plastics Economy Initiative

After signing the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in 2019, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN Environment (UNEP), Ferrero has now become a member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, participating in the New Plastics Economy initiative. Ferrero joins a group of leading businesses across the entire plastics value chain, all committed to a shared vision of a circular economy for plastic, in which it never becomes waste or pollution. Becoming a participant organisation of the New Plastics Economy initiative marks an important step in Ferrero’s work towards making 100% of our packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
Key to the New Plastics Economy initiative are cross-value chain collaborations between businesses, aimed at developing at-scale solutions.

Ferrero will play an active role in New Plastics Economy Initiative, working on shared R&D and innovation projects, including efforts to continue driving the transition to a circular economy for plastic.
